It is important to decide which data is used in calculating a performance review’s final results because the outcome of the review depends entirely on the quality and relevance of the input data.
- It ensures fairness and accuracy. If incorrect, outdated, or biased information is included, an employee may be judged unfairly, either too positively or too negatively, without it reflecting their real performance.
- It improves relevance. Not all data about an employee’s activity is equally important. Selecting the right data ensures the review focuses on meaningful contributions, not minor tasks or unrelated metrics.
- It helps reduce bias and inconsistency. Performance data often comes from multiple sources (managers, peers, etc.), and these can vary in reliability. Carefully choosing which data counts helps create a more objective and consistent evaluation.
- It supports better decision-making. Performance reviews influence promotions, salary changes, and training opportunities. Using the right data ensures these important decisions are based on solid evidence.
- It builds trust and transparency in the process. When employees know that only appropriate and relevant data is used, they are more likely to view the review system as credible and fair.
