The self-nomination phase consists of allowing each individual that will participate in the review to choose who are the best suited people to provide feedback about their work. This approach allows for greater ownership, transparency, and fairness in the review process, as employees actively engage in shaping feedback dynamics rather than having assignments solely dictated by managers or People departments.
In Nailted you can configure who gives feedback to whom in three different ways:
100% by administrators:
Where the administrators are the ones who decide who gives feedback to whom by deactivating both the self and manager nomination phases.
💡We recommend that you only do this manually if less than 30 people will participate in the evaluation.
Delegating this work in the participants:
By activating the self nomination phase you allow employees to select the co-workers who they want to receive feedback from, thus ensuring that they receive feedback from the people they work with.
Delegating this task on employees has the following advantages:
- Empowers individuals: Encourages self-advocacy and confidence in one’s work being able to appoint the people you believe can provide you with high quality feedback.
- Enhances transparency in the review process: As it reduces the possibility of favoritism or overlooked contributions allowing a more open and inclusive nomination process.
💡Nailted recommends to always use the self-nomination together with the manager nomination to double check that the people selected is the best fit for providing feedback about the person.
With the self nomination phase active, the nomination process is delegated to the participants who will be able to select among their peers the ones that they work more closely with and can provide actionable feedback.
If the self nomination phase is active, we will have to take into account whether we have configured the campaign manually, which allows us to write a message to the participants to explain the process, or if the campaign is configured as automatic, in which the communication of the nomination will be done automatically by the platform.
In both cases the system will allow us to select the minimum number of assignments per person and the duration of the process so that the system will automatically send reminders to the participants who have not completed the nominations as the end of the phase approaches.
Delegating this work to managers:
Where by activating the manager nomination phase you delegate this work to managers.
💡If your evaluation will involve more than 30 people we recommend you to activate the manager nomination phase as it will help you to:
- Be more efficient and effective: Managers know a large part of the company, but in many cases it is almost impossible to get to know individually to all the teams. Besides, the time investment will be very high if you need to carry out this process with a large number of people.
- It is complicated to know who has to give feedback to whom: Many times we are not aware of whether we are assigning a person to receive feedback only from their "friends" or from those who are not so "friends", so they may not receive objective feedback.

What happens when the automatic self nomination process starts?
As administrators will rely on participants to perform their nomination process, they will be the ones that start the nomination process in Nailted.
- Having the phase active, if the campaign is manual, administrators can add an additional message to the one set by Nailted, telling the participants how to carry out the process.
In automatic campaigns this message is not sent, as reminders are sent to the people who have some pending task to complete.
- Participants via the link in the notification or by logging in from my.nailted.com will be able to see pending/incomplete nominations under their Task section.
- Clicking on the name of the person will open a new window where you can select or type in the name of the person who will provide feedback.
- In the drop-down menu that will appear next to the newly selected person's name, they can select the peers that will provide him feedback.
- Once you have selected the person who will give feedback, the system will give you the option to add more reviewers.
- When the participants set the number of nominations that administrators have established, they can click on the confirm nominations button so that the administrators can see on their dashboard that this person has already configured their nominations.
- In manual campaigns, participants will not be notified until administrators manually start the participation process.
In automatic campaigns, participants will receive an email notification to start the next review phase (i.e. manager nomination phase or participation phase) once the nomination has been made by the participant.
Administrators will have visibility of the entire process, being able to provide advice if needed to participants.
